I walked into to Hobby Lobby with no intention of making a personal purchase, just a small purchase for the church. As I was casually following my friend down the clearance isle, my eye caught a beautiful square glass birdcage. I notice this birdcage once before. In my mind I was like--it would look so beautiful in my living room. I looked at the price, $69.99 but it was 50% off. $34 seem reasonable but a large crack in the glass in one of the panels made it extremely negotiable. So I.....
The NegotiationHanded my cart off and was blazing down the isles to find an associate---I was ready. The only associate in sight was a gentleman across the store. I approach him in a confident voice and said, "I have a question about a piece of your retail." As we were walking towards the clearance isle, I kept saying to myself, "don't marry it, don't marry it." It an audible voice I told him the story about the crack and was wondering if that is the lowest price could be, considering it was largely damaged. But I didn't mind it being damage because I was just gonna take the glass panels out anyways. He looked at the item and said, "Let me ask the manager." He walk a few feet away and picked up a phone. After a few minuets he came back and said, "60." I paused and questionably blurted, "60%, that is it. I don't think he is gonna sell it for even that much." The guy awkwardly stood silent and then said, "sorry." I said, "alright then, thank you."
The Afterthought
I should have talked to the manager directly and negotiated with him. I knew that the birdcage had been on the shelf for at least a month cracked and unsold. I could have used that also in a bargaining chip. The price that I would have taken for it was $13.99, which was 80% off. For Hobby Lobby it wasn't a big deal considering that they eventually put their clearance isle at 90% off.
Well, I tried learned and maybe next time will get the deal!
